December has arrived. Christmas trees are shining brightly in living rooms across the country. Stockings are hung by the chimney with care…OK, you get the picture. It’s the holidays. And with the holidays come the New Year’s resolutions.
I actually don’t like to use the word resolution because a “resolution” means trying to fix something, and there’s nothing wrong with me (or you).
So instead, I set New Year’s goals. And you can too. Here’s how.
- Sit down and think about where you’re currently at in life. What have you accomplished so far? What would you like to accomplish in the future? Make a list of everything you want to accomplish, or make a list of 100 goals you have for your life.
- After you finish your list, take a look at everything you wrote down. What jumps out the most at you? What do you feel most passionate about? What gets you the most excited? These are the things you need to be pursuing now.
- Write down the goals you want to accomplish by the end of 2009 (make sure to choose a writing goal!). Post your goals somewhere you will look at them often.
- Spend the next 365 days (well…starting on January 1) working toward those goals.
Many of you will want to make a writing goal, which is great! But I encourage you to dream big. Set a goal for yourself that’s big enough to challenge you. Some examples of writing goals could be:
- Write a novel by December 31, 2009
- Write everyday for 365 days in a row
- Get a short story published
- Write 1 poem a week until December 31, 2009
- Share your writing with one new person a month
By setting big, but attainable goals, you will be on your way to reaching your writing dreams. So what are your writing (and life) goals for 2009?
