Don’t Forget to Put Your Name On It

A few months ago my writing coach told me that she “Googled” my name and no references to me came up on the first page.

She told me although it takes time to rank with Google, I needed to get my name on that first page.

I didn’t really think much of it. I figured at some point, if I kept putting content out there, I’d be ranked on Google.

But as I was posting the most recent guest post on Procrastinating Writers, I realized a huge—but obvious—mistake I had been making for almost a year and a half: I wasn’t putting my byline on any of my posts.

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been adding my byline to all of my posts (slowly, but surely!). Now my name is finally ranking on the first page of Google.

Here’s how to avoid the mistake I’ve been making for almost 16 months now:

Put Your Name on It.

It’s as simple as it sounds. Put your name on it: your blog posts, articles, Flickr images, YouTube videos, etc. Claim them as yours (as long as they actually are yours, of course).

Here are some reasons why.

Putting your name on it:

  • Shows that it is yours. You wrote/created it.
  • Can help position you as an expert. As you get your name out there more and more, people will start to refer to you.
  • Can help your search engine ranking, allowing people to find you more easily.

You’d be amazed how many times you walk past a “no-duh” opportunity and don’t even realize it.

What brilliant and simple advice.

I have always had a blog which has my name in it but realised as I was reading my Write Anything column articles simply come up with “by Jodi”.

I went back in and had a look at my Wordpress account and changed the name to be displayed. While I have no problem getting onto the first page of Google – thanks to a unique name – getting to anything “good” or something I would want people to find is another issue.

I shall be spreading the word …

A good piece of advice…

@Jodi Cleghorn It’s amazing how many times we realize simple, but brilliant things (like putting your name on your pieces). Having a unique name is very helpful in getting a higher Google ranking (that’s why many fiction writers use a pen name). Unfortunately, when you have a pretty common name (like I do), you have to do everything you can to let the world know you wrote something.

@Ironman Thank you! I’m glad it helped you.

Thanks — this was an excellent reminder. I googled my name and unfortunately, my LinkedIn account was No. 1 on the first page of Google rather than any of my writing samples. However, my blog is on the first page of my googled name, so that’s good.

I also googled my blog, Tenacious Me, and it’s No. 6 on the first page of Google.

That quick exercise showed me what I’m up against!

@Laura Lee Bloor It’s definitely a good idea to figure out where you and your blog rank on Google…and then make efforts to improve your ranking (thru SEO and other measures).

Glad to see you’re back!
