@Laura Lee Bloor It’s definitely a good idea to figure out where you and your blog rank on Google…and then make efforts to improve your ranking (thru SEO and other measures).

Thanks — this was an excellent reminder. I googled my name and unfortunately, my LinkedIn account was No. 1 on the first page of Google rather than any of my writing samples. However, my blog is on the first page of my googled name, so that’s good.

I also googled my blog, Tenacious Me, and it’s No. 6 on the first page of Google.

That quick exercise showed me what I’m up against!

@Jodi Cleghorn It’s amazing how many times we realize simple, but brilliant things (like putting your name on your pieces). Having a unique name is very helpful in getting a higher Google ranking (that’s why many fiction writers use a pen name). Unfortunately, when you have a pretty common name (like I do), you have to do everything you can to let the world know you wrote something.

What brilliant and simple advice.

I have always had a blog which has my name in it but realised as I was reading my Write Anything column articles simply come up with “by Jodi”.

I went back in and had a look at my WordPress account and changed the name to be displayed. While I have no problem getting onto the first page of Google – thanks to a unique name – getting to anything “good” or something I would want people to find is another issue.

I shall be spreading the word …
